Dar es Salaam schools boosted by latest resources for Tanzania

Our second shipment to Tanzania in 2017 is destined for ten primary and secondary schools in the country's main port, Dar es Salaam. Here, as at most schools in Tanzania, textbooks are in poor supply, so School Aid has stepped in to help fill the gaps in subjects ranging from English, maths and science to economics and geography. Although the Tanzanian curriculum differs from that in the UK, there is plenty of overlap on individual topics, and the depth of information in the books, as well as the illustrations that often help to illuminate the text, are really welcomed by teachers and students. The illustrations are particularly valuable in secondary schools, where teaching is exclusively in English, even though many students lack a thorough grasp of the language.

In addition to textbooks, the schools have been supplied with fiction and other library books, thus helping to introduce the joy of reading for pleasure - something that is relatively unusual in Tanzania. All but two of the schools have a library, and most are planning to introduce reading clubs once they have received their books. Given School Aid's focus on libraries and reading clubs, this is particularly welcome, and we look forward to hearing about progress in these schools.
