Our spring shipment to Tanzania saw School Aid partnering for the first time with the established UK NGO Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). Working with VSO volunteer Steve Scorer, we despatched a consignment of textbooks and reference books to the district of Lindi, in the far south of the country, close to the Mozambique border.
Most of the recipients were under-resourced government secondary schools, some with no electricity, and very few with computers. Their five-thousand-plus students might pay no school fees, but only in four schools do some of them have their own textbooks, and library facilities were limited or non-existent.
Against this challenging educational backdrop, hopes are high. Libraries are planned, along with reading clubs and the establishment of teacher resource areas - and we look forward to hearing news of the impact of their new resources.
