New library at Zerilda Park Primary School
Zerilda Park Primary School in Cape Town, opens their bright and spacious new library.
This library was a collaboration between School Aid, Learning in Reach and The Bookery, with additional support from the Rotary Club of Cape Town. School Aid funded the set-up costs of the library and with its publishing partner, Usborne Books at Home, donated the majority of the lovely children's books. It also helped fund the stipend of a new library assistant, Ms Pouchea Hector. Learning in Reach is a non-profit organisation that works with the Lavender Hill Community on education and empowerment project. They led the collaboration and managed the installation of the library, involving parents at the school and local entrepreneurs. The Bookery team and volunteers sorted, classified, cataloged and covered the books into a library collection.
Here is a picture of some of the 1,300 learners with the school's Principal, Ms Lorna Engeldoe, who spoke at the opening ceremony. This is a school that faces a lot of challenges, so to start the year with a dedicated space to enhance literacy is amazing.
