Golf Day 2011

School Aid’s second Golf Day took place at Denham Golf Club on Wednesday, 20th July 2011. There was a maximum turnout with a field of 19 teams. The weather was overcast and dry, the course was lush and verdant, and a good time was had by all.

Coffee and bacon rolls were served on arrival, which was then followed by a shotgun start at 9.45am. The players had an opportunity of doubling their money on the fifth hole, but this challenge proved too tough for most, as only three out of 76 golfers landed their ball on the green!

Raffle tickets were sold during the morning and the lucky winners took home some wonderful prizes. Denham’s famed three-course carvery lunch lived up to its reputation. The chairman of DGC David Jones, acted as MC. Our President and Founder Joy Baker gave a brief address and introduced our Chairman Janis Mowlam. Joy focused on the future rather than our successful past. We were extremely fortunate to have the popular comedian Russ Williams as Auctioneer. Russ conducted a stunning Auction and his unique skills ensured many of those present dug deep.

Prizes were presented for the straightest drive, nearest the pin, third, second and first teams. The winners of the overall competition were ‘The Stragglers’ consisting of Nigel and Neil Bennett, Greg Lock and Nick Cosh.

Before everybody left, David Jones took delight in announcing the amount raised, and the princely figure of £13,500 has now been reached! Such great support means we can confidently plan ahead for more consignments of essential resources required to improve the education and life chances of many African children.

The committee would like to thank everyone who sponsored the event, either by donation, entering a team, sponsoring a hole, or donating gifts for the raffle and auction.
