Volunteer role:  Operations Internship

School Aid is a small registered charity with 13 years experience of sending high quality recycled educational materials to schools in disadvantaged communities in several countries in sub-Saharan Africa.  This internship gives a hands-on opportunity for developing initial management skills in a friendly volunteer environment while getting broad experience of a small not-for-profit business with international contacts.  The position is unpaid.

Hours:  This part-time position is up to 16.5 hours per week during the core warehouse hours of 9.15am to 3.00pm Tuesday to Thursday and is based in the School Aid office/warehouse near Beaconsfield.

Salary:  Expenses, including travel costs for motor vehicle to and from the School Aid warehouse.

Description of role:  The Operations Intern will be responsible for assisting with the smooth operation of the warehouse and supervision of the warehouse volunteers. The Intern will report to the Manager on site.  Training will be provided.

Key tasks:

Regular

  • Assist with opening up and closing down the warehouse operation each working day
  • Assist with the collection/delivery/unloading of donated UK goods, liaising with volunteer warehouse coordinators
  • Assist in organising African shipments
  • Oversee the volunteer staff rota for the warehouse
  • Assist with the general administration in the office, liaising with administration volunteers.
  • Assist with liaise with donating UK schools and other charitable organisations
  • Coordinate the efficient sorting/packing of materials by volunteers
  • Coordinate a safe, comfortable, orderly work environment for volunteers, and motivate volunteers through encouragement, and feedback
  • Ensure that Health & Safety guidelines are being followed
  • Oversee systems for reviewing and filtering incoming donations of goods
  • Continuously review processes and procedures, and make recommendations for improvements to the Manager

Periodic

  • Represent School Aid at appropriate events
  • Recruit and train new packing and sorting volunteers, helping to promote School Aid to the public
  • Provide assistance with marketing and fundraising

Requirements and key skills

  • Good organisational skills with materials, tasks and people
  • Good oral communication and motivational skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to multi-task
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to carry out manual handling tasks
  • Good IT writing skills: Word, Excel, Access, e-mail
  • Driver’s licence and vehicle (there is no public transport to site)
